NADiff Gallery

A Message Regarding the Exhibition
NADiff Gallery

NADiff Gallery is pleased to present "The Beats of Ghosts," a solo exhibition by artist Yui Samejima.
Yui Samejima was born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1988 and graduated from the Department of Printmaking, Faculty of Arts, Kyoto Seika University in 2010. She is currently based in Kyoto and primarily creates paintings.
She is an artist who has been attracting increasing attention in recent years, having exhibited in the curator-selected selection-GYM at "3331 ART FAIR 2022" (3331 Arts Chiyoda) in 2022, and participating in "ACT (Artists Contemporary TOKAS) Vol. 5 'Attracted Presence'" (Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo, 2023) this March.
Samejima's theme is "connecting the visible and the invisible," and she depicts diverse motifs, such as tools used in ancient festivals and Shinto rituals, in fragments, combining them on the canvas to express them in paintings. The amorphous canvases are inspired by a technique called "yobitsugi," which involves repairing broken pottery and lacquerware with gold. The broken or patched forms seem to suggest the existence of things that are not depicted.
In this exhibition, starting from an interest in the existence of ghosts—formless and intangible entities—I will present new paintings that attempt to express the invisible presence by superimposing the unseen elements outside the fragments of the motifs with the existence of ghosts. Please come and see them at the venue.
